2nd Grade Sentence Surgery

Inspired by a post on Pinterest, my kiddos and I will be conducting sentence surgery this week! I took our vocabulary words from Frog and Toad All Year, Lesson 2 and used each vocab word in a sentence (one statement, one question). The students will receive 1 popsicle stick, 1 band-aid with a period on it, 1 band-aid with a question mark on it, and of course the sentence strips to perform their "surgery" on.

Their job: As the sentence surgeon you must decide if any word in the sentence needs a capital letter (popsicle stick) and if the ending punctuation is a period or a question mark (band-aid's).

Pics will be taken of my second graders completing this lesson, cannot wait!

Pinterest Inspirations!

Found on Pinterest this A.R. Line will help my 2nd graders avoid bickering about whose turn it is to take an A.R. Test!

With telling time being a 2nd grade indicator I thought this customized clock idea from Pinterest would be a perfect reference guide!

DIY Clipboard

Looking to fix up an old clipboard?
All you need is a roll of patterned duct tape (I got mine for $4 at Walmart) and I added a little extra touch to my polka dot theme by hot gluing a polka dot ribbon on the top :)

Parent Orientation Goodies

As a beginning teacher I went way and beyond preparing for parent night! I made goodie bags, found cute parent sign in sheets, and created a power point presentation to play as parents mingle.

My goodie bag poem goes:

I am so glad you are here!
I have some goodies for you!
The eraser is to let you know it is okay to make mistakes. We will correct them and learn from them no matter what it takes.
The smarties say you are really smart, and really special too.
The lifesaver is to let you know I am here for you.
The pencil represents the learning that we will do. School can be pretty tough but its a ton of fun too!

Organizing Pocket Chart

As a 2nd grade teacher I feel that buying this pocket chart was possibly one of the best investments I have made so far in my classroom. I purchased this on Amazon and it has just what I need for my weekly Harcourt Reading stories.

If you'd like to purchase this pocket chart you can find it at the following link:

Miss B's DIY Crafts

Every teacher can add a little flair to her classroom with this DIY initial!

Wooden Letter: $3 from Michaels
Bonus pack of Crayola Crayons: $3 from Walmart
Hot Glue Sticks & Gun: $3 from Walmart

Clothespins are a cheap tool that can be incorporated in today's classroom easily. I spiced up my clothespins by hot glueing strips of fabric (that matched my classroom theme of course) along one side of the pins. Quick, easy, and cute DIY project!

Clothespins: $1 Dollar Tree
Polka Dot Fabric: $2 Walmart
Hot Glue Gun: $3 Walmart

Ever wonder what to do with all of the broken, chewed up crayon pieces your little darlings leave behind? Distribute the broken pieces into a muffin container and bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes. Make sure to let them cool and you will have a set of round rainbow crayons in time for St. Patricks Day!

Arthur's Reading Race

A cute way to connect Fiction with a memorable character: Arthur!

FREE Reading Strategy Posters

As I get ready to begin the school year I am constantly searching the web for resources, on TeachersPayTeachers I just came across a set of free printable reading strategy posters PERFECT for 2nd grade. I located this little treasure at the following link:

FRI Strategy Anchor Charts

Strategy #1: Predicting

So I've searched pinterest and teacher blogs for inspiring anchor chart ideas. I finally found a few that I wanted to recreate. The first story of our reading series is Arthur's Reading Race by Marc Brown and I thought why not create a prediction chart tailored to the story? I am very pleased with the end result and  I intend on laminating these charts and passing out post-it notes to my students so that they can contribute predictions in the designated squares.

Classroom Tour

As my very first post I decided to share a classroom tour. I am sure that each and every first year teacher has felt the same joy and giddiness of decorating her very first classroom. But the true reward comes when you are able to step back and stare in awe at the final product; a room that is truly yours, this special space that you have carefully labeled to perfect organization while staying true to the theme of your choice, a room where learning will soon be taking place. So here it is, a classroom tour of my very special Dr. Seuss themed classroom:
